The Multilingual Department is committed to providing the necessary support for the many new-to-country EL students that we serve. Their needs are unique in that many of these students may have had limited formal education experiences, may be coming from refugee camps, and may have not been previously exposed to the English language at all. This Newcomer Toolkit was designed by the Newcomer Rapid Response Team to provide assessment, instructional and other materials for building leaders, teachers, and other MPS staff working with newcomers.
Freelang has online dictionaries available in the following languages:
Multilingual Call Center
Minneapolis Public Schools offers a Multilingual Call Center which provides support and information to families who speak Spanish, Somali and Hmong. Individuals with questions regarding MPS can call 612.668.000 between the hours of 6 a.m and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Multilingual Language Line
Minneapolis Public Schools also offers access to a live interpreter service 24/7/356 via the Language Line. This service is to ensure effective communication between schools and families regardless of a family's home language. This service provides live interpreters in any language at any time of the day. Contact building administrator or building administrative professional to get access to the necessary codes to use this service, or view the Language Line instructions on the sidebar here if you are MPS staff.
