Native Language Literacy
  • Language Arts Instruction focuses on developing oral language, reading and writing skills in the student’s first language.  Teachers fluent in the student’s native language provide instruction utilizing techniques, methodology and special curriculum in the students’ primary language.

  • Students who speak Spanish, Hmong or Somali have the opportunity to learn to read in their fist language at designated Native Language Literacy (NLL) sites.  Native Language Literacy classes are taught by bilingual teachers literate in the students' first language.  Instruction focuses on building literacy skills in the first language (reading and writing)

  • Research has shown that developing literacy skills in the first language fosters stronger literacy skills in English.  NLL programs offer a minimum of four years of native language instruction, and many programs continue to offer native language enrichment opportunities far beyond for years.  NLL students acquire English language literacy skills through the content classes taught in English the rest of the day.
